Senior Casualty Underwriting Specialist

This is a Full-time position in Pittsburgh, PA posted February 23, 2021.

The Senior Casualty Underwriting Specialist is a member of a team that is responsible for the stewardship of the Commercial Auto, General Liability and Umbrella lines of business. The successful candidate will rely upon their production underwriting experience, marketplace experience, and strong technical skills to contribute to the profitable growth of casualty lines of business by providing technical consultation, developing or enhancing market offerings, analyzing territories, and monitoring industry trends.

Responsibilities

At the direction of the Casualty Product Leader, and in conjunction with other members of the Product Management and Development (PMD) team:

Technical Underwriting Support

  • Monitor actual and expected loss ratios and pricing, and make recommendations to ensure consistent achievement of profit objectives
  • Respond to inquiries regarding coverage, policy construction and underwriting guidelines
  • Create, maintain and update reference materials
  • Analyze evolving loss exposures, recommend actions to manage them and implement resulting solutions
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of risk selection and pricing models
  • Develop and deliver technical training
  • Assist other PMD staff, Actuary, Operations, or Legal with responses to market conduct exams, filings, bureau criticisms, and data calls

Product and Market Development

  • Monitor actual and expected premium, and make recommendations to ensure consistent achievement of growth objectives
  • Participate in the multifunctional casualty teams
  • Engage with segment staff, field management and marketing, and brokers to identify, research, validate, and implement products, programs, rating plans, and class of business adjustments that accelerate profitable growth
  • Identify jurisdictional gaps or deficiencies in PMA coverages, programs, rating plans or company tiers, and work with other members of the PMD team to eliminate those gaps
  • Develop and deliver training for product or market enhancements
  • Assist Corporate Marketing with the development of point of sale materials that illustrate the benefits of PMA casualty offerings, including how those benefits differ from competitor offerings

Territory Optimization

  • Research and analyze opportunities and threats for assigned states, including:
  • Market size
  • Competitive landscape
  • Alignment with PMA appetite, include class of business, account size, and program structures
  • Industry experience
  • Exposures
  • Expenses (taxes, surcharges, residual market load, and commission)
  • Rate levels
  • Average cost per claim
  • Make recommendations to maximize PMA revenue and profit in each state
  • Create, maintain and update related jurisdictional reference materials

Industry Analysis

  • Monitor industry results and trends
  • Review industry financial results published SNL and A.M. Best
  • Review industry research
  • Attend industry conferences pertaining to casualty lines of business
  • Identify trends that may have a positive or negative influence on PMA results and make recommendations to optimize results

Project Management

  • Lead independent and multifunctional projects to achieve objectives for technical underwriting support, product and market development, territory optimization and industry analysis

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 10 or more years of underwriting experience, focused on general liability, commercial auto, and umbrella for middle market, risk management or alternative market accounts
  • Deep knowledge coverage language, rating plans and loss exposures
  • Intellectual curiosity with a bias to embrace uncertainty and develop effective solutions to challenges
  • Strong research and analytical skills, with the ability to translate findings into decisions and recommendations
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and foster a team-oriented environment
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to confidently interact with colleagues at all levels of an organization, internally and externally
  • Ability to travel for business purposes
  • Experience writing technical reference material, developing and delivering training, and managing projects are beneficial
